Sardinian prisons, too many inmates for few places in Massama, Uta and Tempio
The uneasiness of inmates is growing and there is a serious shortage of staff in prisons

The prisons of Sardinia break out. In Oristano-Massama there are 264 inmates for 259 places , in Tempio Pausania 190 for 170 places .
Even in Cagliari-Uta the limit is almost reached, with 559 inmates for 561 (official) places . In reality even outdated, given that the ministry's data does not include the cells destroyed by inmates with mental disorders who "exasperated by mental discomfort, hurl themselves on the furnishings and walls making them unusable".
Maria Grazia Caligaris , referent of the Socialism Rights Reforms association, takes stock of the conditions of prisoners in Sardinia.
"An underestimation of the number of cells available - he observes - is also recorded in Nuoro where there are 251 prisoners but only in theory 375 cells because a section with about 80/90 beds is not accessible".
On the other hand, the "Tomasiello" detention center in Alghero is totally in contrast with 156 places and accommodates 92 people. Attendance at San Daniele di Lanusei is stable (29 appearances for 32 places) and in the three Penal Colonies where for a total of 583 places there are 270 inmates.
The overall data: “In the 10 prisons there are 2,069 restricted but only 1,647 are definitive . In fact, 402 are waiting to complete the judicial process and 204 (just under 10%) are awaiting first judgment. The incidence of foreigners is 21.4% overall . It exceeds 67% in Mamone-Onanì, 62% in Is Arenas but also Bancali with 29% and Cagliari with 17% add problems to already very difficult conditions ”.
Emergencies, continues Caligaris, “primarily concern the shortage of personnel . Directors and deputy directors, commanders, superintendents and prison staff. Legal-pedagogical and administrative officials ".
On the other hand, there are very many inmates with serious illnesses "some of which are incompatible with being behind bars". The reference in particular is to inmates with mental problems , "a bad figure for a rule of law and a society that sends those who only need treatment to jail".
