The Council of Ministers has decided to challenge Sardinia Region Law No. 26 of September 18, 2025, regarding "procedures and timeframes for regional healthcare assistance for physician-assisted suicide."

The decision, according to a statement released by Palazzo Chigi, "is because the law, in its entirety, falls completely outside the scope of regional jurisdiction, exceeding statutory powers, and undermines the State's exclusive jurisdiction over civil and criminal law and the determination of essential levels of benefits relating to civil and social rights, as well as the division of responsibilities in matters of healthcare, violating Article 117, paragraph 2, letters l) and m), and paragraph 3, of the Constitution."
