Sardinia aims to strengthen its palliative care network and increase coverage to 90% of patients in need by 2028. The Regional Council has approved a new expansion plan, which includes more beds, new specialist teams, and increased home care services.

"The Plan will have to be implemented in all the island's local health authorities," explained Health Councilor Armando Bartolazzi. "Monitoring will be carried out by the General Directorate of Health."

Among the concrete goals: 15 new multi-professional home care teams by 2026, dedicated to every 100,000 residents, working in conjunction with general practitioners, to ensure 24/7 continuity of care. An increase in hospice beds from 71 to 167, and the opening of dedicated outpatient clinics and hospital wards with beds reserved for terminally ill patients.

Estimates speak of approximately 4,500 adult patients cared for each year and about forty minors . This commitment will also require new hires, to be planned in the upcoming Staffing Requirements Plans.

The palliative care network in Sardinia has existed since 2013 , but the approval of this Plan marks an important step towards more widespread and homogeneous care, capable of accompanying patients and their families at a delicate moment in life.
