Sardinia is still burning: fires in Serramanna, Serdiana, and Portoscuso. Canadair and Super Puma aircraft take flight.
Emergency weekend on the island. Yellow alert in the Cagliari area for tomorrow. The fury of the fires continues unabated in Sardinia, where in June alone, fires have devastated thousands of hectares of land. This weekend, too, is a time of emergency for the island, with several blazes requiring the intervention of the regional firefighting team, with four helicopters in the air and a Canadair from its Olbia base. Among the most challenging fronts is that of Serramanna , where this morning flames erupted in the countryside near Pranu S. Luxeria.
To contain the damage, the Forestry Corps deployed two helicopters , the first taking off from the Iglesias base and then, at a later stage, reinforced by a second aircraft from the Villasalto base . Initially, only one aircraft had been expected to intervene, but this was overturned by the development of the fire, which necessitated the reinforcement of the firefighting equipment. A team from Forestas, firefighters, volunteers from Assemini, and the barracelli of Serramanna also intervened on the fire front. The operations were coordinated by the DOS of the Sanluri Forestry Station.
A second fire broke out this afternoon in Serdiana , in the Sedda su Zippiri area. The Director of Firefighting Operations at the Sinnai Forestry Station is coordinating the firefighting operations on site. Several teams from the Forestry Corps, Forestas, and volunteers are involved, supported by a helicopter from the Pula base and the Super Puma from the Fenosu base. Given the scale of the fire, a Canadair aircraft from Olbia was also deployed.
A third front has also opened in Sulcis , where the Forestry Corps intervened in the countryside of Portoscuso, in the Concali de Su Graboni area. A helicopter from the Iglesias operations base was mobilized for the firefighting operations.
Meanwhile, the island is preparing for another week of emergency. For tomorrow, Monday, July 6, the regional Civil Protection has issued a bulletin with medium fire danger in the Cagliari area , marked with a yellow code .
And while the firefighting machinery continues to work tirelessly and prepares for the next interventions, the initial data for the 2026 summer season have shown a worsening situation compared to previous years. In fact, more than 900 fires have broken out in Sardinia since the beginning of the year , higher than the 10-year average of 778. The flames have already spread across 4,283.71 hectares of land, compared to a 10-year average of 2,652 hectares. More than two-thirds of the fires occurred in June alone. In July, the number exceeded thirty.
