Rare coins, or maybe not. A 72-year-old man from Sassari is under investigation for receiving stolen cultural goods after 40 coins were found in his home, the value and provenance of which could lead to a criminal indictment .
But on this point there is a clash between the prosecutor Gianni Caria and the defense lawyer, Pier Giovanni Arru, who has filed the documentation that, in his opinion, proves his client's innocence.
The coins actually represent the next stage of the story that began when the man put up for sale on eBay the register, dated 1836, “Professions of the Isabelline nuns of this city of Sassari”.
A family heirloom, according to the defense, but legally classified as a "cultural asset," according to the complaint, which the man wanted to sell at a bargain price: 100 euros . And it was precisely this online sale that, once noticed, set the wheels of justice in motion.
They suspect the ledger was stolen, and they search the suspect's home, finding the aforementioned 40 coins. To qualify as rare, they would have to come from an excavation or from the depths of the sea, and the prosecution hypothesizes that some are Roman.
However, the lawyer rejects this hypothesis, arguing, on the contrary, that they are actually from the 72-year-old's father's collection, purchased in lots online, and have a value of zero or almost zero. Regarding the possibility that the register was stolen, the lawyer states that there is no evidence to suggest such a possibility. The questions remain open, and the judge will decide and, if necessary, order a committal for trial.
