Rain and snow chase away the ghost of the water crisis in Sardinia
Still critical issues in the Sulcis, Nuorese and Ogliastra reservoirs, but the basins are filling up againSnow and rain in recent weeks have brought the water emergency to an end in Sardinia. At least for now. Because critical issues remain for some territories served by modest-sized basins as in the case of Sulcis, the upper Nuoro area and Ogliastra.
Now the situation of the reservoirs has improved and the two disturbances that continue to remain over Sardinia could further swell the rivers that supply water to the artificial dams.
According to the monitoring data carried out every month by the Regional Basin Authority, the Sardinian reservoirs contain 56.2% of their maximum capacity in February 2024 , i.e. 1025 million cubic meters of water out of 1824 million cubic metres. A good boost of confidence, if you consider that January ended with 52.5% of the water stored (958.38 million cubic metres). An overall level in the basins which, however, is still far from the 1387.16 million cubic meters of a year ago when the dams contained 76% of the uninvasable resource.
While a large part of Sardinia can begin to breathe a sigh of relief, there remain some medium-small invasions that are still suffering. The most critical situation in Sulcis with the Alto Cixerri water system in emergency because the sum of the water present in the P.ta Gennarta and Medau Zirimilis reservoirs is only close to 11% (10.7%, i.e. 2 million meters cubes out of 18 potted). There is also an emergency in the Maccheronis dam in Posada (Nuoro): here the level exceeds 20%, while it is almost 31% in the Bau Maugeris reservoir (Flumendosa) in Ogliastra.
In all three cases the rains of the last few weeks have offered very little compared to the situation in January and concern remains in view of the beautiful season, already around the corner.
