The Department of Gender and LGBT Policies of the Municipality of Quartu is among the protagonists of a degree thesis by the University of Cagliari. The signature is by the recent graduate Andrea Russo, received by the mayor Graziano Milia in the presence of the councilor Cinzia Carta.
The Quartese department, the first in Sardinia and among the first in Italy, has thus become a case study in the paper dedicated to the representation of LGBTQIA+ people in local public bodies. Russo's meeting with the mayor was an opportunity to share the results of his study but also to argue about the importance of the actions carried out by the sector.
"The problem of discrimination is unfortunately still widespread in contemporary society. A cultural leap is needed, we need to support what would simply be the aspiration to normality", commented the mayor, who on this occasion gave the new doctor the pin of the Quattro Mori surrounded by green, thus resuming, together with the white of the background, the colors of the city of Quartu. Through qualitative research based on the analysis of online/offline data and the execution of meetings with municipal employees and discursive interviews with LGBTQIA+ activists, the work carried out by Russo describes in detail the perception of LGBTQIA+ people also in the context of Quartu.
"I am honored and proud that Andrea Russo, now a master's degree holder in Social Innovation and Communication, has chosen to cite our Municipal Administration as an example in his thesis," commented Councilor Carta. "It is an important recognition for the work we are carrying out on LGBTQIA+ issues, and the fact that for the first time the Municipality of Quartu is used as a case study makes us particularly happy. Contributing with our political action to the development of such a significant thesis is a source of great satisfaction for me. I congratulate Andrea for the excellent work done and for his commitment."
