The second degree trial of the two Bulgarian seamen, allegedly responsible for the death of the 24-year-old Bulgarian sailor, Yordanov Denislav Ivlaylov, victim of an accident, on 7 October, opened this morning in the Court of Assizes of Appeal of Sassari. of 2019, on board the Euroferry Malta cargo ship, which occurred while sailing in the sea of Porto Torres.

The hearing opened with the discussion of the appeal, which began with the indictment of the Attorney General Roberta Pischedda who asked for the confirmation of the first degree sentence, i.e. the sentence of one year and 4 months in prison with conditional suspension for both defendants and the sentence to pay a provisional amount of 60 thousand euros each to the relatives of the victims. A request made by the same lawyers of the relatives of the victim and of one of the sailors who was injured, respectively the civil lawyers Gian Marco Luciano and Vanni Luciano, both of the Sassari bar, who underlined how the episode undoubtedly falls within the jurisdiction Italian as the accident occurred in Italian territorial waters.

The alleged perpetrators are accused of manslaughter and violation of health and safety in the workplace. The boatswain Angelov Valentin had asked to negotiate the sentence, while the commander of the ship, Yvanov Tihomir, and the first officer of the deck Nikolay Rumenov Atanaso had asked to face the trial with the abbreviated trial. In the courtroom the defense lawyers, Silvana Redaelli, replacing Cesare Fumagalli, asked for acquittal for their clients on all charges. The Court postponed the hearing for the replies and the sentence until January 30th.

The tragedy occurred four years ago during an inspection tour of the ship, ordered in prohibitive bad weather conditions for the young 24-year-old together with two other sailors, who were seriously injured. While he was preparing to carry out some maneuvers, a freak wave overwhelmed Ivlaylov, throwing him against a metal grate. There had been nothing that could be done for the sailor. Having left Cagliari, the cargo was forced to stop in Porto Torres after the tragedy.
