The mayor of Porto Torres, Massimo Mulas has signed the ordinance for the safety of the former ironworks in the industrial area, after the structural failure of the roof made up of fiber cement sheets containing asbestos.

The provision is addressed to Laterizi Torres, the company that owns the industrial plant located in via Marco Polo, at the corner with via Fratelli Vivaldi with the order to restore the hygienic-sanitary conditions through the removal and disposal of all waste containing asbestos still present in the area and those deposited in an uncontrolled manner on the land pertaining to the plant, through the assignment to a specialized company equipped with all the authorizations required by current legislation on the subject.

Furthermore, the ordinance provides for the subsequent transmission to the Waste Management office of the Authority's environmental service of the forms certifying the correct disposal of the materials with the obligation to do so immediately and in any case no later than 20 days from notification of the ordinance, to secure the roof and any other unsafe part of the complex, in order to protect public safety and urban safety.

Giuseppe Alesso, president of the Committee for the Protection of the Gulf of Asinara, had also sent a report on the case to the Hygiene and Public Health Service, underlining the problem of the dispersion of asbestos dust.
