Over 400,000 Sardinians are called to the polls on Sunday, June 7 (from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm) and Monday, June 8 (from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm) to elect mayors and municipal councils in 148 of the island's 377 municipalities.

The largest voting centers are Quartu Sant'Elena, Sestu, Porto Torres, Tempio Pausania and Sanluri.

In towns with more than 15,000 inhabitants, a runoff election is scheduled for June 21st and 22nd if no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote.

The territorial distribution of the municipalities voting confirms the weight of the internal areas : 37 municipalities in the Oristano area, 27 in the Metropolitan City of Cagliari, 27 in that of Sassari, 20 in the Nuoro area, 13 in Gallura, 11 in the Medio Campidano area, 7 in Ogliastra and 6 in Sulcis Iglesiente.

One of the most critical issues of this round concerns the small municipalities where only one list has been submitted, out of sixty in total. In these municipalities, the mayoral candidate is challenging abstentionism (the election is valid if at least 40% of registered voters participate and the list receives at least 50% of the valid votes). The real risk, if these thresholds are not met, is the institution being placed under special administration, halting strategic projects and ordinary political activity.

The turnout test included 3 municipalities in the Metropolitan City of Cagliari, 12 in the Metropolitan City of Sassari, 20 in the Province of Oristano, 10 in Nuoro, 5 in Medio Campidano and Gallura, three in Ogliastra and two in Sulcis Iglesiente.
