Poaching and uncivilized hunters: seven reports and a flurry of sanctions in the Cagliari area

Poachers during the holidays. Seven people have been reported by the Forestry Corps, the Cagliari territorial service, in recent days in Sardinia. During the ranger operations , 5 rifles, 4 wild boars, 1 hare, 35 thrushes, 21 nets for trapping, 150 snares for capturing ungulates and 350 for trapping were also seized. Numerous administrative violations were contested. This is the result of an operation by the Forestry Corps - Cagliari territorial service, activated during the holidays to intensify the control of hunting activity and combat poaching and trapping.
Particular attention was paid to the control of hunting activities and big game hunting, also following the numerous incidents that occurred in the last period. Between 15 and 29 December, 250 people were checked and several violations were ascertained.
In Villacidro, the Investigative Unit and the Forestry Station of Villacidro surprised two people hunting in the permanent wildlife protection oasis of Monti Mannu. The foresters seized 3 wild boars killed with prohibited ammunition (buckshot), 2 12-gauge shotguns and 25 cartridges. The two did not have a gun license and were already known for poaching, with a revoked license. They were reported for illegal possession of a weapon, hunting in a prohibited area and use of prohibited ammunition. A third person, owner of the shotguns sold to individuals without the right to use them, was reported for failure to store the weapons.
In Quartucciu, on the slopes of the Oasi dei Sette Fratelli, the Sinnai Forestry Station surprised 4 people engaged in a hunting trip. One of these, without a gun license, was stopped. The recovered weapon was clandestine, without identifying marks. The person was reported for illegal possession of a clandestine weapon and hunting offenses.
In Pula, the Teulada Station stopped a person in possession of a wild boar killed with prohibited ammunition. The individual was reported for hunting with prohibited ammunition and the rifle, ammunition and wild boar were seized.
In Arbus, the Guspini Forestry Station seized a hare killed out of season. The hunter was reported for hunting unauthorized species and reported for suspension or revocation of the license.
In Capoterra, in the Santa Barbara area, a person was caught placing snares to catch thrushes. Reported for bird trapping, with a penalty of up to one year in prison.
In Sinnai, instead, in the Sette Fratelli massif, the Campuomu and Castiadas forestry stations have cleared an area in which 21 bird trapping nets were placed, seizing them.
There were also numerous administrative sanctions, for a total of 7,000 euros, contested in Pula, Villanovatulo, Guspini, Arbus and Teulada for: failure to collect shell casings; failure to pay taxes and regional contributions; use of prohibited acoustic decoys; hunting at an unregulated distance from roads or buildings; failure to use a high visibility jacket for big game hunting.
