During the summer period the prices of air and maritime transport services to Sardinia and Sicily reached peaks of 68%.

And the situation also came to the attention of the Chamber of Deputies and the Minister of Transport Matteo Salvini.

The latter, regarding the problem, explained: «Already with the 2023 budget law, a fund was established to guarantee a complete and effective system of connections with Sicily and Sardinia with a loan of 5 million for 2023, then increased by a further 8, and by 15 million per year starting from 2024. In implementation of these measures, in September 2023 and then in May 2024 as the Ministry of Infrastructure we adopted the implementing decrees which establish methods and criteria for using the fund for recognition of contributions to Sicilian and Sardinian citizens in the form of reimbursement of the price of the airline ticket".

«For summer 2024 – added Salvini – the benefits provided for to guarantee blocked prices on the routes between the Sardinian airports and those of Rome Fiumicino and Milan Linate, and for the connections within Sicily to and from the smaller islands of Lampedusa and Pantelleria".

The MIT, concluded the minister, «in anticipation of the review of public service obligations, is conducting close negotiations at community level to arrive at an amendment to regulation 1008/2008 with the aim of defining a more consistent with the mobility needs of the territories".
