A new green chemistry plant in the industrial area of Porto Torres, a sign of the recovery of investments in the project that had started with the Protocol signed by the social and institutional partners in 2011.

The new unit for the hydrogenation of pelargonic acid will be built by Matrìca, the integrated platform for chemistry from renewable sources created by Versalis (Eni) and Novamont, a new model of economy that involves industry, agriculture, the environment and the local economy in a large redevelopment and innovation project. The aim is to improve the purity of the product, pelargonic acid, used in the formulations of new herbicides, detergent products, sanitation, disinfection and sterilisation, water treatments and the control of microbial activity in public spaces. Some pelargonic acid esters are used as intermediates in the synthesis of biolubricants and emollients for the cosmetic sector.

Matrìca has been operating a platform since 2014 which, starting from vegetable oils, obtains products for applications in many sectors: bioplastics, bio-lubricants, cosmetics, biocides, bio-herbicides, ingredients for animal feed and intermediates for biofuels. The two operating plants with three production lines employ around 200 people directly and indirectly.
