Even with his legs in casts, he managed to attack the medical staff at the San Martino hospital in Oristano.

According to the Local Health Authority (ASL 5), the incident occurred at the Psychiatric Diagnosis and Treatment Service, not in the Emergency Room, as initially reported. The Oristano State Police arrested a 54-year-old man with multiple criminal convictions and mental health issues. He first attacked a doctor in the psychiatric ward where he was admitted, and then the patrol officers who intervened to stop him.

Two incidents occurred, one on July 23rd and the other on August 1st. In the psychiatric ward, the man was guarded for a long time by police officers . First subjected to compulsory medical treatment and then arrested in flagrante delicto, he was finally taken by Mobile Squad personnel to Uta prison , where there is a dedicated unit for such cases.

The arrest in flagrante delicto was made possible thanks to the implementation of new legislation introduced to protect healthcare workers, which allows the precautionary measure to be carried out within 48 hours of the incident, provided it is confirmed by video surveillance footage.

The man is now charged with assault, mischief, and assault on a public official.

The Oristano Local Health Authority condemns the incidents of violence and stands "in solidarity with the healthcare workers." It particularly thanks the doctor who was the victim of the attack, "who returned to duty after only a week of injury to ensure her colleagues' continued support," and the police "for their valuable cooperation, promptness, and willingness to ensure the safety of staff and patients."
