The work is finished. Starting today , the new promenade in Cagliari's historic port, along Via Roma, with over 6,400 square meters of greenery, pedestrian paths, and a 400-meter cycle path, is fully open to residents and tourists.
A redevelopment that has brought green areas embellished with essences of the Mediterranean scrub - lavender, rosemary, thyme and myrtle - jacarandas
and palm trees. But it's also a new place for socializing and relaxing, with benches, fountains, bike racks, and new LED lighting that illuminates the evening stroll.
The new promenade is adorned with the futuristic Dandelions by Polish artist Mirek Struzik. It also serves as a permanent showcase for internationally renowned artworks, including those by Japanese artist Kan Yasuda, whose exhibition "Beyond Form" is on display on the promenade until November 23rd.
With the subsequent opening of the fountain in the Molo Sanità square—which will precede the finishing works on the recreational boating service center— Pinuccio Sciola's "Tricolor Stone" will be added, a work dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Italian Unification.
The port authority has ordered the implementation of greenery and planned the planting of 10 new tall shade trees and 8 climbing plants on the shelters.
The promenade completes the second lot of the project financing by Portus Karalis Srl, for a total private investment of approximately 35 million euros, for the construction and management of a modern service center, with a tourist accommodation hub, currently under construction at Molo Sanità, and the renovation of the recreational boating facilities.
The Authority's goal is to extend the revitalization project to the entire Cagliari waterfront, including the areas freed up by the transfer of all commercial traffic from Molo Sabaudo to the new Ro-Ro terminal in Porto Canale, scheduled for completion by 2029. New green spaces open to the public and a modern cruise terminal will subsequently be planned throughout the western part of the port.
"Today, the city of Cagliari has its entire waterfront promenade back," explains Domenico Bagalà, president of the Port Authority of the Sardinian Sea, "a place that, thanks in part to listening to citizens' concerns, is once again becoming a space for meeting, socializing, sporting events, and culture. But it is also the starting point for a broader vision, which sees the waterfront as the privileged space for dialogue between the port and the city , and which, with the transfer of commercial traffic to the Canal Port, will allow us to rethink the entire waterfront."
