They had presented themselves as lawyers at the home of two elderly women, asking for money to save their children and grandchildren from trouble. Two young Neapolitans had been stopped by the Carabinieri a year ago after having managed to steal about ten thousand euros from the elderly women alone. A scam that cost Alessio Esposito a sentence of three years and 2 months and a fine of 800 euros, 22 years and a sentence of one year and 10 months to Luca Pascale (21).
It was May of a year ago when a (fake) lawyer called the home of an 85-year-old telling her that her daughter had hit a woman with her car. To avoid arrest, she would have to pay a bail of 6,500 euros to the husband of the accident victim. Shortly after, Esposito showed up at the old woman's home pretending to be the lawyer's son: he convinced the woman to hand over the money in cash (about 6,000 euros), jewelry and other valuables. Then they walked away, and when the old woman realized she had been scammed, she filed a complaint.
The carabinieri immediately investigated, having also received a report of a similar episode involving an 87-year-old woman: in this case too, the two had staged the scam of the fake lawyer, telling the old woman that her grandchildren were in trouble and needed 9 thousand euros. In the end, they managed to take away about 3 thousand euros.
The two Neapolitans, however, have made little progress. The carabinieri had managed to stop them and in recent days the trial was concluded, with an abbreviated procedure, in which the 85-year-old woman joined the civil action with her lawyer Alessandra Nocco. Alessio Esposito, defended by the lawyer Salvatore Impradice, was sentenced to 3 years and 2 months and to pay a fine of 800 euros. Luca Pascale, assisted by Antonio Tufano, will have to serve a year and 10 months and pay a fine of 300. Judge Marco Mascia also ordered a provisional sum of 6,500 euros for the woman, compensation for damages to be defined in civil proceedings and legal costs.
