Nuoro is the most generous of the medium-large Italian cities (30-100 thousand inhabitants) with regard to organ donation. It is also number one among the provinces nationwide.

The data comes from the latest edition of the "gift index", the report produced by the National Transplant Center which ranks the numbers of declarations of willingness to donate organs and tissues registered in 2021 at the time of issuing the card identity in the registries of the 6,845 Italian municipalities in which the service is active.

The index, released on the occasion of the 25th National Organ Donation Day which is celebrated next Sunday, April 24, is expressed in hundredths and is developed taking into account some indicators such as the percentage of consents, that of abstentions and the number of documents issued.

Nuoro reached an index of 74.21: in the last year 2,420 adult citizens registered their will on a possible donation, and 2,036 said yes, 84.1%, while abstention it stopped at 33.7%.

Sardinia is also well represented among the top ten large Italian cities (over 100 thousand inhabitants), with Cagliari (5th) and Sassari (6th).

At the regional level, on the other hand, in first place is Cardedu, in the Nuorese area, with a gift index of 90.7 / 100 (consents 96.3%, abstentions 15.5%) and which holds the third place overall in the ranking of small municipalities (less than 5 thousand inhabitants). In second place Morgongiori in Oristano and in third Elini, in Nuorese, both centers present in the national top ten of small municipalities (respectively in 4th and 10th place). Also noteworthy is the presence in the national ranking of medium-small municipalities (5-30 thousand inhabitants) of two other towns in the Nuorese area: Lanusei (6th) and Oliena (7th), while among the medium-large ones Alghero is in eighth place .

Among the provinces, Nuoro is first at the national level, with all the Sardinian realities placed among the top positions: Sassari is sixth, Oristano in ninth place, South Sardinia sixteenth, Cagliari 23rd.

Overall, Sardinia was third among the Italian regions, with a gift index of 65.67 / 100 (consents to donation 75.7%, abstentions 40%), well above the national average which in 2021 stood at quota 59.23 / 100 (consent 68.9%, abstained 44.3%).
