The shock gun immediately immobilized Gianpaolo Demartis , but he never got up from the asphalt of Via San Michele, a street on the outskirts of Olbia . Lying on the ground, motionless, was seen by some family members who arrived immediately on the scene.
Demartis, 57, originally from Bultei, was rescued by the Carabinieri, who attempted to subdue him before using a taser. They then attempted to revive him, but unfortunately, all efforts were unsuccessful. He died during the emergency medical service's intervention from cardiac arrest, the cause of which must now be determined by a medical examiner.
It all happened late Saturday evening, and the Tempio Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation, which, according to rumors, concerns the actions of two soldiers from the Olbia Territorial Unit. This was a necessary step, as they say in these cases, to verify what happened on Via San Michele in Olbia before Demartis's death.
Marco Manca, Demartis's attorney in several criminal proceedings, particularly one for alleged drug dealing, says: " I don't have a formal assignment for this matter yet, but I've spoken to Gianpaolo Demartis's relatives, and they told me they're shocked . They want to know what happened Saturday night, and we'll also be looking for witnesses."
The matter has also sparked controversy. Following a clash between regional prison guarantor Irene Testa and Northern League MP Dario Giagoni , Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini , who as Interior Minister in the first Conte government introduced the device on an experimental basis in 2018, intervened.
"And now let no one blame the Carabinieri, who defended themselves and the citizens they attacked, simply doing their duty," was the brief comment from the leader of the Northern League.
