Just four days after taking office, the new mayor of Nuoro, Emiliano Fenu, is already forced to make an unpopular but necessary decision: to order the closure of schools for tomorrow, Tuesday 17 June due to the suspension of water supplies in large areas of the city . A precautionary measure, which however comes at a particularly delicate time, on the eve of the state exams , sparking controversy and a tough stance by the Cisl Scuola.

The ordinance: schools closed due to lack of water

With an ordinance signed today, Mayor Fenu has ordered the suspension of educational activities in all schools – public, private and state-funded – located in the neighborhoods served by the Cuccullio reservoir: Nuraghe, Carta Loi, Monte Gurtei, Istiritta, Rione Italia, Sa Terra Mala, Sacro Cuore, Badu and Carros, Furreddu.

The measure is based on the official communication from Abbanoa, dated June 13, which provides for the interruption of the supply of drinking water from 8:30 to 18 on Tuesday 17, due to scheduled maintenance work . The absence of the water service would make the school toilets unusable, with consequent health risks.

The list of institutions involved is long and includes, among others, the Liceo Scientifico “Fermi”, the Istituto “Ciusa”, the Classico “Asproni”, the Liceo “Satta”, the “Chironi”, the Istituto Agrario and numerous primary, nursery and lower secondary schools where middle school exams are underway. The decision was also transmitted to the Prefecture, Police Headquarters, Carabinieri and school directors.

The Cisl Scuola protest

The reaction of the Cisl Scuola of Nuoro was not long in coming, with secretary Giovanna Fadda expressing strong concern about the repercussions of the water suspension just before the start of the state exams. "Such a decisive event requires adequate environments: cool classrooms, functioning bathrooms and optimal hygienic-sanitary conditions", declared Fadda. "The schools are working at a rapid pace to complete the procedures before the exam, and this additional difficulty risks worsening an already complex situation". The union contests above all Abbanoa's choice to schedule work on weekdays and during school hours , suggesting instead to intervene on weekends or at night to limit the inconvenience. "During the school year, the schools of Nuoro have already suffered at least five similar interruptions, generating discontinuity in teaching. It is time for public services to put the right to education first ", added the secretary.

Call for dialogue

Cisl Scuola has therefore requested the urgent convening of a round table discussion between the municipal administration, Abbanoa and the social partners, to prevent similar episodes from happening again in the future. "The school must remain a safe, clean and, above all, always open place," concludes the union's note.
