The hearing in the Sassari Court of Appeals for the murder of Nicola Pasquarelli, the 78-year-old man beaten to death and then burned to death in the Piandanna pine forest in August 2023, has been postponed until November 14, 2025. The court had initially ordered only the submission of written documents, but given the importance of the issues to be examined, it instead decided to hold an oral hearing.

There is only one defendant in the proceedings, Antonio Luigi Fiori, 50 years old, from Sassari, who was already tried with the abbreviated procedure last December 2024. On that occasion, the preliminary hearing judge Sergio De Luca had acquitted the man "for not having committed the crime" .

At the conclusion of the hearing 11 months ago, prosecutor Lara Senatore had requested a 20-year prison sentence . The evidence gathered is based in part on the testimony of Aurora Addis, who died shortly afterward, who had the pensioner's body found and identified Fiori as the perpetrator of the murder. Pasquarelli's wife and children have joined the civil action and are represented by lawyers Michele Galia, Vittorio Delogu, and Gianni Emilio Censori. The defendant's defense attorney is Marco Palmieri.
