More infections. A new case of West Nile virus was confirmed today in the province of Oristano. The man is over sixty years old and is currently hospitalized at San Martino Hospital. This brings the total number of West Nile virus infections recorded in the Oristano area in 2026 to twenty-seven .

The Department of Hygiene and Prevention of Local Health Authority (ASL 5) has already begun an epidemiological investigation and preventive measures, which include the competent authorities disinfecting the area where the person who contracted the virus lives. Prevention Department Director Maria Valentina Marras once again reminded all citizens of the measures they must take to protect themselves from the virus, which is spread exclusively through mosquito bites: "Two important actions: prevention and protection. Prevention, essentially by avoiding stagnant water, an ideal habitat for these insects to proliferate. Therefore, empty plant saucers, change pets' water bowls frequently, and be careful of containers where water can stagnate," explains Dr. Marras. "It's also important to protect yourself, both indoors and outdoors, with mosquito nets, repellent sprays, and long clothing, especially at dusk, when mosquitoes are most active."
