There was a near tragedy in Macomer. A large piece of concrete cornice broke off from the upper part of the historic building in the central Via Roma, which has housed the elementary schools for 100 years, falling right in front of the main entrance.

Perhaps yesterday's heavy rain, the wind, but also the precariousness of the century-old structure, caused the cornice to fall.

The accident occurred yesterday evening, while children were playing in the square outside. The alarm went off immediately and the firefighters arrived and cordoned off the entire square and this morning they intervened to remove the other pieces of unsafe plaster and cornice.

Last night, in addition to the school director, Sergio Masia, the mayor Riccardo Uda, the deputy mayor and councilor for education, Maria Luisa Muzzu, and the councilor for public works Aldo Demontis arrived promptly on site. The lessons this morning took place regularly, even if the children were admitted through a secondary entrance, the one in Via Genova.

The fall of the cornice constitutes an important danger signal regarding the health of the building, which requires extraordinary maintenance. The projects exist, but the necessary funds are lacking.
