A 36-year-old inmate, originally from North Africa, died today in Bancali prison: the penitentiary police officers found him lifeless in his cell. The causes of death are being investigated to understand what really happened. When the police officers opened the door they found him lying on the floor, with the stove canister next to him and a strong smell of gas. In the cell, together with the victim, there was also another inmate who had not noticed anything. This is not the only mystery in Bancali, where two assaults and an escape attempt have also recently been recorded .

The Sappe union has reported the latest tragedy in the Sassari prison: "Investigations are still underway," reports the delegate for Sardinia, Antonio Cannas, "to understand whether the cause of the prisoner's death, which occurred through the inhalation of gas from the canister that prisoners legitimately possess to cook and heat food and drinks, was the deliberate desire to take his own life or the consequences of a high gone wrong. But what is certain is that the man is dead and this is a sad and serious fact ."

" It is time that instead of the very dangerous gas canisters, sometimes transformed into bombs against prison police personnel, prisons be equipped with electric plates to heat the food of the inmates ", continues Sappe. "For some time now, as the first union of the prison police, Sappe has urged the Dap leaders to review the prison regulations, in order to organize the use and possession of gas canisters differently".

The secretary general of Sappe, Donato Capece, adds: "What is happening in recent weeks in prisons, including suicides, assaults, fights, escapes, is of unprecedented gravity and is the consequence of the reckless dismantling of prison security policies implemented in the past. The penitentiary system, for adults and minors, is crumbling more and more every day and is in absolute need of urgent interventions ."
