An astonished country, plunged into drama in an instant by the news that arrived late yesterday evening from Sappada. Mamoiada is a town in shock due to the death of Bastiano Canu, one of the symbolic men of the Barbagia carnival and exponent of the Pro Loco group of masks.

Father of two, 61 years old, died of an illness while he was in Friuli Venezia Giulia, in one of the many performances around the peninsula with his beloved Mamuthones and Issohadores. "A great man leaves us, he was a born leader, listened to by everyone," comments Raffaele Sestu, regional president of the Pro Loco.

The tragedy took place on Thursday evening, a few hours after the expected exhibition of the Mamoiadine masks in Sappada, scheduled for Epiphany day. Bastiano Canu's conditions immediately appeared very serious: he died in the hotel where he was staying with his group.
