The situation of the Macomer CPR brought to the attention of the Committee for the Prevention of Torture of the Council of Europe.

The guarantor of the prisoners for Sardinia Irene Testa has in fact written to President Alan Mitchell, asking him to visit the island's detention facilities and also the detention center for repatriation in the province of Nuoro, a structure which until 2014 was a prison consisting of two sections, one of which is reserved for Islamic terrorists.

«When I visited the Macomer CPR – underlines Testa in his request – I noticed how, despite the important management efforts of the director and the coordinator to welcome and look after the detainees, there are numerous and worrying critical issues».

First of all, «the presence of people who, in reality, should not even be in a CPR. There were 38 guests present at the time of my visit, who live in a de facto detention situation; their number is destined to double shortly and this is of particular concern considering the fact that the staff working in the structure is not adequate in number. Activities are scarce and - adds Testa - everything is left to the good will of those who work there. Increasing the detention period to 18 months for people who have not committed any crime, and are held in worse conditions than in prison, is frankly unacceptable."

«Furthermore, guests are not allowed to use their cell phones – concludes Testa – they have a telephone with a telephone card at their disposal and since they are, in most cases, poor or have-nots, they cannot contact their families. In fact, everything has been taken away from these people. Let's at least let him cultivate his affections."
