The martyrdom of the victims of the foibe also touched the young city of Carbonia very closely: today in the Martiri delle Foibe park, the municipal administration, represented by the president of the city council Federico Fantinel and the councilor for General Affairs Katia Puddu, celebrated " The Day of Remembrance", in which thousands of Italians murdered and tortured in the karst cavities of Friuli and Istria were remembered. Innocent victims for the sole reason of being Italians residing in the border areas that Italy had previously occupied.

During the ceremony, a bouquet of flowers was placed near the stele dedicated to the martyrs. «A symbolic gesture - underlines Fantinel - but fundamental to remember all the victims of a tragedy of which awareness must always be raised to avoid repeating the mistakes made in the past».

The approximately 140 Sardinians deserve special mention, some of them miners from Carbonia and Sulcis murdered in the Arsia coal basin.
