The NAS, the specialized unit of the Carabinieri, is proceeding with its investigations under the authority of the public prosecutor, who is in charge of the investigation opened by the Public Prosecutor's Office into the death of Mario Siffu, the 32-year-old from Porto Torres who died of severe sepsis after surgery on Tuesday night at the Santissima Annunziata Hospital in Sassari.
The parents, through their lawyer Giuseppe Onorato, have filed a complaint with the Public Prosecutor's Office requesting an autopsy to determine the cause of their son's death and whether any diagnostic tests have been ordered regarding his health.
"I knew him as a child, looked after him as a teenager, and always supported him when he was in prison as if he were my own son." Luciano Licheri, a community worker and president of the Turritan non-profit organization "Il Faro," which has been active since January 2025 with the aim of preventing and combating all types of addiction, recounts his close friendship with Mario Siffu.
Today would have been his first day of freedom, after about six months in prison for petty theft. He had been complaining of severe abdominal pain for some time, which he told his parents and aunt during recent prison visits.
On Monday evening, around 7:00 PM, he was rushed to the emergency room of the Sassari Civil Hospital. He had undergone surgery during the night, but the following day, Tuesday, March 24, his condition worsened. He died that afternoon around 3:00 PM from a serious infection caused by intestinal obstruction. His parents, alarmed that morning, received the tragic news when they arrived at the hospital.
"Mario was a truly good boy," Licheri recalls, "difficult but kind-hearted. In the last conversation I had with him in prison, I saw he was happy because he would be released in a few days. I had already told him in the past that I would take him out of there and transfer him to a rehabilitation center, but he was rebellious and thought he could do it all on his own." A bond that had begun when Mario Siffu was a child, then fate brought them together in prison. Licheri listened to him, talking about plans and a life outside bars.
