From today the new drainage system in the dam on Lake Maccheronis is fully operational. The start after the last test for the work, carried out by the Central Sardinia Reclamation Consortium, which represents the first part of the planned interventions for the expansion of the reservoir available for irrigation and drinking water from Siniscola to San Teodoro.

The upgrading will be completed with the construction, by Enas, of the additional elevation which will allow for an increase in the storage capacity of over 6 million cubic metres.

Among those mounted on dams, the sluice gates of the Maccheronis waste system (three in total) are among the largest in Europe.

"We're talking about an important work, long overdue and gone through many difficulties that inevitably ended up having an impact, directly or indirectly, on the construction sites," said the councilor for public works, Pierluigi Saiu. «The new sluice gates - he added - make it possible to manage the reservoir with a discharge capacity that goes from 100 cubic meters per second to 3,600 cubic meters per second. The most important aspect is represented by the possibility, today, to review the lamination plan which will therefore allow to increase, in safety, the water collection capacity in the reservoir in the most critical periods".

«Furthermore, with the construction of the dam elevation, with an increase of 1.7 metres, we will also increase the overall capacity of the reservoir which will go from 23 to more than 29 million cubic meters of water. For the intervention, which will be carried out by Enas, 10 million euros are already available, the planning is in an advanced stage of the authorization process and by the end of the summer we expect the tender for the assignment of the works to start. The Consorzio di Bonifica has carried out a truly valuable job, allowing the sector and the local communities to achieve an important result. We are satisfied and will continue on this path», concluded Saiu.
