A marble plaque screwed to a granite stone was discovered near the entrance to the Non-Commissioned Officers School of La Maddalena by the mayor Fabio Lai and the commander of the military institute, Simone Battisti, with Quirico Sanna present, representing the Sardinia Region, l former Defense Minister Arturo Parisi, and the president of the Carlo Avegno Celebration Committee, Mario Rino Me.

The monument is dedicated «to the heroic first demonstration of spontaneous resistance by soldiers of the Navy, the Army and the Carabinieri who engaged, from 9 to 13 September 1943, German line forces and elite units, nullifying their attempt to occupy the Fortress of La Maddalena".

The commemorative plaque of the "Battle of La Maddalena" recalls in particular the figure of the ship captain Carlo Avegno , at the time commander of the Royal Military Arsenal, later awarded a gold medal in memory, «for having organised, motivated and encouraged his by example, until the final assault in which he gave his life."

With a rapid and sudden blitz, immediately after the armistice of 8 September, the Nazi-Germans had occupied the stronghold of La Maddalena, taking the high military command prisoners. Not everyone resignedly accepted the evolution of the situation; there were in fact some military commanders, including Carlo Avegno but not only him, who reacted or in any case did not allow the Germans to occupy fortresses and barracks commanded by them.

The commemorative plaque, on the 80th anniversary of those events, was installed by the Municipality of La Maddalena and the Cv Carlo Avegno Celebratory Committee. Yesterday afternoon, in the council hall, the latter organized, with its president Mario Rino Me, a historical conference entitled: War events of September 1943 in the Corsican Sardinian theatre.

The events will continue on September 13th with the unveiling, at the Non-Commissioned Officers School, of another commemorative plaque, this time donated by the Municipality of Meina (Novara), birthplace of Commander Carlo Avegno, a town which will be represented by the Mayor and the Councilor for Culture; a ceremony will follow at the Moneta monument, built by the ANPI in 2019, in memory of those war events and of those who lost their lives there, Italians and Germans.
