The Carabinieri of Sassari foiled three attempted scams and arrested the "fake" colleague.
The incident occurred yesterday when several elderly people reported calls to the operations center from a supposed Carabinieri lieutenant: he had told them they were involved in a robbery at a jewelry store because their car's license plate had been cloned. The man threatened the victims with searches and arrests if they didn't cooperate, essentially handing over all the jewelry and money in the house, which would then be recovered by a "consultant."
The real Carabinieri, called by an elderly woman, had meanwhile been informed that an unknown person was ringing the intercom. The officers immediately intervened and located a man in the area who was trying to hide his face. When approached by the police, he responded by stabbing them in the abdomen and attempting to flee, which was quickly stopped.
The Carabinieri discovered, among other things, that the alleged scammer had an earpiece, which he may have used to communicate with his accomplices. The criminal justified himself by claiming to be in the area to sell tomatoes, even though he didn't have a car. It later emerged that the elderly woman escaped the scam because she didn't own a vehicle due to her disability.
The suspect, after being transferred to Bancali prison, attended the validation hearing today where he answered charges of attempted aggravated fraud, threats, and resisting a public official.
The judge confirmed the arrest and ordered him to report to a Carabinieri station in Naples. Meanwhile, officers are trying to identify the other participants in the scam.
