A vessel flying the flag of Belize has received a detention order from the Port State Control Unit of the Port Authority of Cagliari.
The cargo arrived yesterday in the Sardinian capital for commercial operations. Upon inspection, serious deficiencies were found in the crew's preparation and response to emergencies, in the prevention and fight against fires and in the management of on-board safety. In total, 16 irregularities were found, nine of which were grounds for detention.
As ordered by the Port Authority, the ship will not be able to leave Cagliari until the necessary safety conditions are re-established, and only after it has been inspected again by the Port State Control unit.
Since the beginning of the year - the Maritime Directorate reports - 57 foreign ships have been inspected, 13 of which have been subject to administrative detention for serious shortcomings in terms of navigation safety, while 39 ships have been found to have several less serious irregularities. "The activities are carried out within the scope of the control over the conditions set out in the International Conventions applicable to merchant ships engaged in international voyages - the Coast Guard explains - and are aimed at constantly verifying the safety conditions of merchant ships, the living and working conditions of the crews on board and the protection of the marine environment from pollution".
