He started a fire in his cell, then attacked the officers who arrived to help him. Some of them were also intoxicated by the smoke that invaded the entire section.

Still high tension inside the Uta prison: Michele Cireddu, regional secretary of the Uil Pa Penitentiary Police, recounts the episode.

«An inmate set the mattress on fire and the flames quickly spread, reaching the furnishings. The harmful fumes then invaded the entire section, making the air unbreathable and reducing visibility to a minimum", is the story.

Once again, according to the Uil representative, "the intervention of the prison police was providential, saving the perpetrator of the gesture and putting out the flames, making the other prisoners in the section safe".

The inmate did not thank the rescuers. Indeed: while the officers entered to bring him to safety he flew into a rage and attacked them.

«These were moments of extreme tension», underlines Cireddu, «Just yesterday we met the new administrator and he agreed with us on the need to reorganize the work processes from scratch. The penitentiary police personnel in too many institutions in Sardinia are in constant and extreme emergency."
