A mega landfill and a spectacular cleanup in the municipality of Castelsardo. The operation, coordinated by the Municipality, took place on Saturday, October 3rd, on a slope in the San Giovanni area, along State Road 134.
Here, sinks, tires, mattresses, bulky items, riding saddles, plastic, glass, bale nets, milking cans, and piles of abandoned waste were removed. Over 2 tons of waste were recovered during the day. The collection was made possible by climbers from the Castelsardo CVSM, who worked with the assistance of employees from Econova, the company contracted for waste collection and management in the municipality, the Barracellare company, and ANAS staff.
During the operation, a large amount of waste was also discovered inside a stormwater drainage tunnel upstream from the main road. The canal was completely blocked by plastic packaging and crates, garbage bags, and advertising panels, and was subsequently cleared. Last Saturday's operation is part of a series of environmental protection measures, carried out by the municipal administration led by Mayor Maria Lucia Tirotto, aimed at ensuring urban decorum and combating uncontrolled waste dumping.
"The incivility underlying certain behaviors is unacceptable and penalizes the entire community," Mayor Tirotto emphasizes. " To combat those who disrespect the environment and pass the costs of their reckless behavior onto the community, the response can only be twofold: on the one hand, public awareness campaigns; on the other, strict compliance with the rules. And precisely on this last point, the city council recently approved a crackdown on fines for littering and is working to implement a widespread video surveillance system across the area."
In recent weeks, the Municipality had worked on the gutters along State Road 200, recovering approximately half a ton of garbage. Earlier, at the entrance to the town, it cleared the roadside of several hundred kilos of paper and other waste. "These cleanups," explains Environment Councilor Christian Speziga, "are necessary due to the incivility of those who turn roadsides into open-air dumps. This situation is unfortunately common among many local administrations dealing with the phenomenon of illegal waste dumping. We must not let our guard down, and in fact, another operation has been scheduled for the coming days along Provincial Road 90, on the border with Valledoria."
