Finally, some good news for all those families with children left without a pediatrician. The Oristano Local Health Authority (ASL) has announced that it will soon activate pediatric Ascot clinics in each of the three districts of Oristano, Ghilarza-Bosa, and Ales-Terralba. This was one of the requests made by the many residents of the province who organized a demonstration in Baratili San Pietro on December 9th, taking over the street with strollers. The Ascot clinics for the littlest children are an experimental project to provide basic medical care to children left without it following the retirement of several private pediatricians and the difficulty, despite repeated calls for applications, in recruiting new ones: 1,558 children in the Oristano district, 1,695 in the Ghilarza-Bosa district, and 287 in the Ales-Terralba district.
"We fully understand the needs and concerns of families, and we are working alongside them to find solutions to address the emergency of the shortage of general practitioners and pediatricians, which is likely to persist in the medium and long term," says Grazia Cattina, Director General of the Oristano Local Health Authority. "Equitable care and addressing inequalities in access to healthcare services are priorities: this is why we have initiated procedures for the implementation of an experimental and provisional project that will open special pediatric clinics in all affected areas."
In addition to the pediatric Ascots, the Health Authority has also obtained the agreement from Gaia Serrau, a private pediatrician working in Area 1 of the Oristano district (which includes the municipalities of Cabras, Oristano, Palmas Arborea, Santa Giusta, Siamanna, Siapiccia, Simaxis, and Villaurbana), which currently has not reached its maximum capacity of 1,000 patients, to also accept children residing in other areas, subject to obtaining authorization. This was also one of the requests of the many families who protested in Baratili in December.
Authorization must be requested directly from the professional exclusively by email to: gaiaserraupediatra@gmail.com , specifying the child's information in the body of the email. Dr. Serrau will then respond.
