A tourist was taken ill during his holiday aboard the cruise ship "Costa Firenze", sailing between Savona and the Balearic Islands.

The passenger, 79 years old of Ukrainian nationality, in the throes of acute pulmonary edema, was rescued by the Coast Guard of Porto Torres who proceeded to medical evacuation for the urgent admission to the hospital of Sassari. Once the operations room was alerted, the Harbor Master's Office ordered both the hijacking of the ship in calm waters towards the center of the Gulf of Asinara, and the exit of the CP 810 patrol boat, specialized in search and rescue activities.

Arrived on the spot, about 14 miles from the port of Turriano, the naval unit with the paramedical staff of 118 on board, began the transhipment operations of the patient, landed on the dock of the Port Authority and accompanied by ambulance to the Santissima Annunziata, while the ship cruise continued navigation.

"The execution of a medical evacuation by sea - highlights the captain's commander, Gabriele Peschiulli - represents in any case a very delicate activity in which the timeliness of the diagnosis by the service of the International Radio Medical Center and the operational readiness of the Guard Costiera are of fundamental importance to quickly ensure the necessary medical treatment ".
