Seventeen years ago by donating marrow he saved his sister, today he gives a smile to those waiting for a heart, kidney and cornea transplant. Fabio Lai, the 54-year-old farmer from Desulo who died in hospital in Cagliari after falling ill while working in the Siliqua countryside, will be remembered for his great generosity. Yesterday he returned forever to his country, where family and friends said goodbye to him for the last time.

The tragedy

"He had recently overcome some personal problems and life had started to smile on him again", comment some friends. But the rediscovered serenity came to terms with a cruel fate last Monday afternoon. During work he suddenly felt ill. With him there was a nephew who immediately took action to ask for help. Then emergency transport to Brotzu, but attempts to save his life proved in vain.
