"He's a monster, he ruined our lives."
Magdalena Murawska, the partner of Toni Cozzolino, the 49-year-old from Olbia who was burned alive on the street on 11 March 2022 by his neighbour, Davide Iannelli, and died in hospital after ten days of agony, screams in despair in front of the Court of Assizes of Sassari and before the same accused. Called to testify at the murder trial of the confessed criminal, the woman withstood the questions of the public prosecutor of Tempio Pausania, Daniele Rosa, for an hour, telling of the constant threats, teasing and insults that Cozzolino, her and their son who was then 8 years old, suffered from the accused.
«He was a nightmare for the whole building, he argued with everyone, and we and other residents had reported him several times to the carabinieri and the police. He is a bad man, a real monster,” the woman repeated. Then she exploded into sobs: «I can't take it, I can't take it anymore with this monster here behind me watching me, I can't take it anymore. He ruined our lives." The President of the Court, Massimo Zaniboni, had to suspend the hearing for about twenty minutes to place a separation panel between the witness stand and that of the accused.
Murawska responded for an hour to other questions from the civil party lawyers, Antonio Fois, Giampaolo Murrighile and Massimo Perra, and then to those from the defense lawyer, Cristina Cherchi. «After Toni's death I left - she says - I returned to Poland to my family because I was afraid for myself and my son. Our life is ruined, I never told him how his father died, and I never recovered. I don't sleep, I have panic attacks and I can't work."
The trial was adjourned until February 13, when the accused Davide Iannelli will be examined.
