Giovannino Pinna, the 38-year-old from Sassari accused of the voluntary manslaughter of Davide Calvia in 2023, has been sent for trial. This was the decision made today in Sassari court, following the preliminary hearing, by preliminary hearing judge Sergio De Luca.

The judge granted the request of prosecutor Armando Mammone, who, in March, when closing the investigation, had changed the man's charge from negligence to voluntary manslaughter, but he did not appear in court.

In addition to the main charges, he also faces shipwreck and theft. According to the investigation, Pinna and Calvia had set out on a stolen boat on April 12, 2023, which sank the same day. Pinna, who had raised the alarm on his cell phone that same day, was found on the 13th off Porchile beach in Sorso, while Calvia, on the other hand, appeared lifeless in the waters of Lu Bagnu, a hamlet of Castelsardo, on April 22.

According to Mammone, Pinna killed Davide with "a violent action", capable of causing fractures to the cervical spine and thorax.

After the murder, according to the reconstruction, the 38-year-old had abandoned his cousin and peer in the sea, simulating a drowning, and then caused the boat to sink.

"My client is innocent," declared defense attorney Nicolò Vecchioni, who chose the ordinary trial procedure rather than the expedited one. The civil parties are represented by attorneys Cinzia Cossu and Marco Palmieri, while Sara Dettori is representing the boat owner. The first hearing will be on October 13th.
