The new Italian chess champion arrives from Sardinia . Francesco Sonis , 22 years old, originally from Oristano , grandmaster, won the tournament valid for the assignment of the absolute title , which ended today in Turin.
The new champion finished with 7 and a half points out of 11, leaving his immediate pursuers half a point behind.
The outcome of the competition was uncertain until the last match: after the tenth round there were four players, with Sonis, at the top of the standings with 6 and a half points.
The Sardinian won his match with Claudio Paduano while the others, in their respective matches, were unable to go beyond a draw.
The Italian championships, organized by the Turin Chess Society, took place in the halls of the State Archives.
