"Marshal Laura Ambrosini" of the Milan Carabinieri, with her confident and professional tone, initially gained the trust of the owner of a hospitality business in Barbagia. This phone call sparked a well-orchestrated scam , which fortunately ended without financial consequences for the victim.
The self-proclaimed soldier, who was actually a makeup artist, had requested to host four colleagues on duty for seven nights. After a brief negotiation, the parties agreed on a fee of €1,400, and the owner provided her bank details for the payment. The next day, however, the scam escalated. The woman received a second call, this time from a landline apparently linked to a Carabinieri station in Milan. In reality, it was a case of "Caller ID Spoofing," a technique used to falsify the caller's number and make it appear credible. A second accomplice, introducing himself as "Marshal Gabriele Simeone," intervened and alleged an error in the bank transfer: €2,800 had been credited instead of €1,400 . In an urgent tone, the man then demanded the immediate refund of the excess amount.
Despite the pressure and the apparent authenticity of the situation, the owner of the facility remained calm. Aroused by the request, and thanks to prevention campaigns also launched by the Carabinieri, she decided not to take any action and instead contacted the real military directly to file a complaint . The attempted scam was thus foiled .
