From an unusable, overgrown playground used as an illegal parking lot, to a space offering opportunities for recreation, play, and socializing. This is the future of the playgrounds on Via Cornalias, in the Is Mirrionis neighborhood, laid out in a project by the City of Cagliari.
The project was presented to residents today and is part of a broader urban regeneration project for the Sant'Avendrace, Is Mirrionis, and San Michele neighborhoods, which the administration is developing together with the University.
"We're starting with a place that was long a meeting place for local residents, but which over the years has lost its function," Mayor Massimo Zedda emphasized. "It will be so again: a space dedicated to socializing, accessible to all, with greenery and safe play areas for children, well-lit and functional, and safe to walk around. A much-needed and beneficial project for the neighborhood's growth."
Un momento dell'assemblea a Is Mirrionis
For Matteo Lecis Cocco Ortu, councilor for urban planning, this is "a project that has been long-awaited, requested by local residents, and which we believe will help raise awareness of being part of a neighborhood that is crucial to the entire city."
The budget is €1,152,000, with work set to begin in the coming months. Green spaces will offer opportunities for recreation and relaxation, contribute to improving air quality, and include seating, tables, and walkways, particularly welcoming to young and old.
The children's area, the Municipality announced, will be equipped with safe, modern games and equipment designed for children of all ages, stimulating creativity and physical activity, while ensuring full accessibility for all. Sports facilities, such as a dedicated climbing area and multipurpose sports fields with basketball hoops and nets, along with a bocce court, will promote physical activity and interaction between young people and adults. The spaces, which will feature bleachers, will also be able to host informal events, aiming to encourage community participation.
The project also includes the redevelopment of the sidewalks and road surface, the redevelopment of the two small plazas in the Sacripanti complex with new paving, including soft and shock-absorbent paving for the play areas, and stabilized earth for the tree-lined areas. "Also planned are a new rainwater disposal system, an irrigation system for the green areas, a drinking fountain, bicycle racks, waste bins, a new lighting system to supplement the existing public lighting, and a video surveillance system."
