Faced with the strong fire risk of recent weeks on the island, the prevention and control activity of the Cagliari Forestry Corps continues unabated. And 7 people have already been reported to the judicial authorities.
Among them also those responsible for the fire that broke out on the afternoon of May 16th in Elmas, in the Giliacquas area . The fire affected 8 hectares of reed beds close to the Santa Gilla lagoon , deteriorating an important nesting habitat for protected species. Due to the thick smoke and to allow firefighting operations, the nearby railway line was interrupted for a few hours , with smoke invading streets and houses. The investigation activity of the Forestry Corps made it possible to identify at least 3 children as alleged perpetrators, all under the age of 14, who had already attempted to set fires in the area in the previous days .
The minors, who due to their age are not punishable, were nevertheless reported to the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office for arson .
Among those identified by the Foresters is also the alleged perpetrator of the serious fire that occurred in April in the Sarroch countryside, which affected over 140 hectares of woodland, scrub and olive groves . The fire, as it was ascertained, broke out after the man attempted to burn some branches after pruning. The strong wind caused the fire to go out of control, with the flames quickly spreading. The man was reported to the Public Prosecutor's Office of Cagliari for negligent forest fire.
In the same days of April, in the Donori area, two agricultural entrepreneurs engaged in cutting down a forest were reported for negligent forest fire , again for having imprudently set fire to branches with the fire then going out of control causing the destruction of over 5 hectares of land, of which 3 are forest.
Another fire occurred on May 18th in San Priamo, in the countryside of San Vito . In this case the cause was identified in the anomalous functioning of an agricultural machine , with the fire also affecting a wooded area for a total area of over 3 hectares. The Foresters intervened to make the area safe, also using the regional air service helicopter, which took off from the Pula base. The investigative activity continued with the seizure of the agricultural vehicle, as it was the cause of the fire. The owner was reported for negligent fire because he did not ensure the efficiency of the machine.
However, investigations aimed at ascertaining the causes of further fires which affected the territory of the Metropolitan City of Cagliari and the province of Southern Sardinia are still underway.
PREVENTION - The prevention activity of the Forestry Corps is also intense to comply with the indications contained in the Regional Fire Prevention Regulations issued by resolution of the Regional Council and in force from 1 May in Sardinia. The regulations have the aim of making the territory safe to prevent the triggering and above all the development of fires, through a series of rules and conduct to be scrupulously observed by all citizens.
There are already 3 administrative sanctions for a total of 30 thousand euros, contested for failure to comply with the provisions , in particular for small brush fires carried out without the required authorization issued by the Forestry Corps.
The Forestry Corps invites the population to scrupulously observe the Regional Fire Prevention Regulations and urges citizens to collaborate, reporting every fire and every "circumstance deemed important for determining the causes and identifying those responsible" to the Forestry Corps' environmental emergency number 1515. .
