Don Giovanni Laconi, 90, from Ussassai, passed away yesterday in Rome after a long illness. He had spent his life as a missionary in the Middle East, for years coordinator of the provincial secretariat of the Salesians of the Middle East. Don Giovanni Laconi took his first steps in his mission in Israel at dawn in 1955, after attending high school between Lanusei and Ivrea and his novitiate at Villa Moglia di Chieri. Uncle of Don Franco Serrau, parish priest of Stella Maris in Arbatax, Giovanni had spent over 60 years away from home without forgetting his roots. He tried to return to his village at least three times a year to visit relatives and friends, at least for as long as his health allowed. In 2004, he celebrated his 50th anniversary of priesthood in the village.
