Far-right subversion involving Sardinian minors: a flurry of searches
Twenty-two people are under investigation across Italy, with young people from Oristano and Sassari being investigated for online radicalization, with photos of weapons and hymns to attackers emerging. They were immersed in extremist contexts of supremacist, accelerationist, antagonistic and jihadist origin: 22 searches were carried out by the State Police throughout Italy on minors, between the ages of 13 and 17, considered involved in subversion and domestic and international terrorism, radicalized on the web.
In Sardinia, several young people with ties to the far-right have been identified. On behalf of the Cagliari Juvenile Prosecutor's Office, searches were conducted on two fifteen-year-olds living in the province of Oristano, a thirteen-year-old living in the province of Cosenza, a seventeen-year-old living in the province of Messina, and a fifteen-year-old living in the Padua area. The investigation began with an investigation by the Cagliari Juvenile Court Prosecutor's Office into a fourteen-year-old boy searched on April 11 in Oristano by the Flying Squad. He had posted photographs on his Facebook profile with his face covered while holding knives and firearms. The boy had voluntarily handed over, in addition to a flag with a Celtic cross, a toy shotgun without its red cap, with numerous writings and symbols attributable to the white supremacist movement, as well as the names of the notorious attackers Anders Breivik, Stephans Balliet, Alexandre Bissonnette, and Patrik Crusius.
Also on behalf of the Cagliari Public Prosecutor's Office , a seventeen-year-old resident of the province of Sassari was searched. This action was conducted following developments in an investigation, launched in 2023 and coordinated by the Cagliari Public Prosecutor's Office , into a nineteen-year-old arrested on September 6, 2024, by the Cagliari DIGOS ( Special Operations Unit) for recruitment for the purpose of terrorism committed for the purposes of ethnic, national, racial, or religious discrimination or hatred, and propaganda and incitement to crime for the purposes of racial, ethnic, or religious discrimination.
Other searches were carried out in numerous provinces, especially in Northern Italy.
A statement from the Police Headquarters states that "the prevention efforts and intelligence gathering, shared within the Anti-Terrorism Strategic Analysis Committee, as confirmed by the investigative developments of investigations conducted against minors who were searched, arrested, or found in extremist contexts, have revealed a progressive increase in the involvement of minors in deviant and juvenile crime contexts in contexts of subversion and domestic and international terrorism."
In this regard, "the web plays a key role in many of the radicalization processes among young people, due to its easy accessibility, speed, and confidentiality in exchanging messages, making it an essential vehicle for disseminating content for the purposes of indoctrination, radical proselytism, and training."
