Carabinieri from the Sassari Company, during a routine check at the home of a father and son with criminal records, discovered an electricity theft. Moreover, the theft occurred in a house occupied by the couple illegally, a property whose ownership was difficult to trace.

Checks with the utility revealed that the meter had been disconnected in 2020, but it's unclear how long the electricity theft had been going on. The suspects claimed that the illegal connection was already present on site when they entered.

At the validation hearing in Sassari court, where the arrested men were represented by lawyers Salvatore Carlo Castronuovo and Marco Palmieri, Judge Valentina Nuvoli—the prosecutor was Giovanni Dore—ordered the validation of the arrest but without any further measures. Regardless of the alleged crime, the situation experienced by the two men represents one of the many situations of social distress and marginalization experienced in the city by those without the means to survive and afford housing.
