"Go down to via Roma immediately, a part of the tree has collapsed on the kiosk." The call went to Antonio Durzu , a newsagent in Piazza Ingrao, in Cagliari , at dawn. On the other end of the phone, the boy who delivers the newspapers, the first to notice the disaster. «I didn't think it was like this», continues Durzu, «because it is not the first time that branches have fallen. I thought it was the usual , but this time it was an important part of the plant».

The newsagent struggles to find the words in the face of disaster. He had been running the business since 1996, but the kiosk had already existed since 1983. Now he will be forced to start from scratch. Even before the trunk removal operations dragged the newsstand away , he had said: «It will have to be demolished, it cannot be recovered» .

A word of comfort comes from Giorgio Angius , deputy mayor and councilor for public green areas of the Municipality of Cagliari: «We are sorry for the newsagent, which has suffered serious damage. The administration will do everything to help him and allow him to go back to work as soon as possible ». And in the meantime we are trying to shed light on what happened: "We are still in the initial stages of the investigation, it is not clear what could have happened", continues Angius. " The tree was apparently healthy : it hadn't been checked, so we don't know if it was healthy inside as well."

Clearly now it will be necessary to proceed with the interventions: "To the citizens who were fond of this tree, symbolic for the city, we can say that the foliage will be lightened", concludes the commissioner. "The part left standing, which we would like to safeguard, is the subject of a safety intervention".
