Ex-obese woman 30 weeks pregnant and her unborn child saved thanks to an exceptional laparoscopic surgery at the Brotzu in Cagliari , carried out by two teams - Obesity Surgery, led by Giovanni Fantola and Gynecology and Obstetrics, directed by Antonio Macvò - who worked side by side.

The story begins in 2018, when the woman's weight exceeded 120 kilos. Under the guidance of a multidisciplinary medical team composed of a surgeon, a dietician, a dietician and a psychologist, Mrs LE underwent bariatric surgery five years ago in the Obesity Surgery Center of Arnas Brotzu: she had dropped to 65 kilos. A result that allowed her to open the door to a new pregnancy.

But at the thirtieth week an intestinal obstruction forced her to hospitalize: on the third floor of San Michele the clinical picture immediately appeared potentially dangerous, both for the life of the mother and that of the fetus. The operation was very complex both due to the size of the uterus in the abdomen and the intraoperative discovery of an internal hernia, one of the most fearful and complex complications of bariatric surgery.

Thanks to the proven experience of laparoscopic surgery and the perfect synergy of the two teams, the operation was performed in total safety for the mother and the fetus, continuously monitored via tocography throughout.

The laparoscopic technique, combined with advanced anesthetic protocols, was decisive and allowed the patient to recover quickly, so much so that on the very evening of the operation she was already able to walk in the corridors.

The pregnancy continued for a further five weeks until the birth by caesarean section, carried out by the team of the Obstetrics Department. The child, alive and vital, was joyfully welcomed by the nursery of the San Michele hospital.
