The Gulf crisis is taking its toll on Italian families. Between February and August 2026, during the six months of conflict, the consumer price index for electricity, gas, and other fuels rose by 11.4% , adding a total of €1.8 billion to the bills of the country's nearly twenty-seven million households.

This is according to an analysis by Confartigianato presented at the 22nd edition of the "Energies and Sustainability Confartigianato High School" convention, organized by the Confederation with the energy consortia Caem, Cenpi, and Multienergia, from September 21 to 23 in Domus de Maria.

A comparison with the overall price picture gives a sense of the shock: over the same period, inflation stalled at 2.8%, while retail energy prices rose four times faster. Gas was the main driver of price increases, up 13.5%, followed by electricity with a 10.1% increase. However, the impact was not evenly distributed across the region. Lombardy households top the regional rankings, with a total increase of €329 million and a cumulative increase in energy prices of 12.3% over six months. Veneto follows, where additional spending reached €216 million, despite the steepest increase recorded among the regions, at 14.8%. Lazio came in third, with €166 million more on household budgets, ahead of Emilia-Romagna (€155 million) and Piedmont (€144 million). Further back are Campania (123 million) , Tuscany (106) and Puglia (95), while in Sicily the effect of the price increases stands at 91 million and in Friuli-Venezia Giulia at 58. Liguria follows (51 million), Trentino-Alto Adige (47), Marche (43) and Calabria (41). Under forty million are Sardinia (35), Abruzzo (32) and Umbria (25), while the smallest increases are recorded in Basilicata (12 million), Molise (7) and Valle d'Aosta (4).
