Abbanoa is trying to put a big patch in the gigantic leak in Sardinia's pipelines: the maxi-tender of over 42 million euros has been awarded which, in the intentions of the island's water manager, will revolutionize the water service in 15 municipalities with the highest dispersion rates thanks to investments from Pnrr funds (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) intended for interventions aimed at reducing losses in distribution networks, including digitalisation and network monitoring.

We will proceed with the redevelopment of the networks through a series of maintenance interventions which mainly concern the replacement of existing pipelines and the reconstruction of connections to the various connected users, but also the engineering and districtisation. The work will continue for about a year and a half.

The 15 centers affected are Nuoro, Olbia, Sassari, La Maddalena, San Teodoro, Porto Torres, Bosa, Siniscola, Cabras, Budoni, Selargius, Tempio Pausania, Terralba, Sestu and Sorso.

In 2012 (Istat data) Sardinia was the region with the highest rate of dispersion ever: around 55%, while in the latest Istat surveys (2022) it reached around 50%, in fifth place behind Basilicata, Sicily , Abruzzo and Molise. An improvement, for sure. But the data makes the phenomenon of drought even more worrying.

The activity of efficiency improvement and fight against losses, as Abbanoa reports, «has already made it possible in recent years to increasingly reduce the quantity of water withdrawn, treated and distributed in the network: from the 272 million cubic meters injected into the network in 2013 it went to just 227 million cubic meters in 2022 with a decrease of 45 million cubic meters in eight years. The equivalent of 30 billion one and a half liter bottles of water."
