Crimes against minors, alarm on the Island: six out of 10 victims are girls or teenagers

There were 175 crimes against minors committed in Sardinia in 2023. And these numbers increased by 8% compared to 2022.
In 61% of cases the victims are girls or young women. The most common crime is mistreatment against family members or cohabitants: 69 cases, +19% from the previous year.
The data, processed by the criminal analysis service of the Central Directorate of Criminal Police, were made public by the Terre des Hommes Foundation at the Chamber of Deputies, on the occasion of the presentation of the dossier "The condition of girls and young women in the world 2024" and in view of the International Day of the Girl Child.
On the island, the same number of cases were recorded in 2022 and 2023 for the crimes of aggravated sexual violence (23), possession of pornographic material (1) and sexual acts with a minor (10).
On the other hand, in addition to cases of mistreatment towards family members and cohabitants, there is an increase in cases of sexual violence (+14%, 24 cases), violation of family assistance obligations (7 cases, +40%), abduction of incapacitated persons (11 cases, +83%), and child pornography (+133%, 14 cases).
In 2023 there was also one voluntary homicide, none in 2022. On the contrary, there was a decrease in cases of abuse of means of correction or discipline (8 cases, -20%), those of abandonment of minors or incapable persons (7 cases, -56%), child prostitution (no cases in 2023, 4 in 2022) and corruption of minors (2 cases in 2022, none in 2023).
